We wanted to get these 9th gradersreading. This was not a group reading assignment, yet many chose to read the same book as their friends. We included graphic novels, nonfiction, and memoirs along with fiction options. There was a lot of enthusiasm for The Hate U Give, Templar (graphic novel), and Brian Selznick's books.

In preparation for a short story unit, Aaron wanted students to read books about issues they might face. We brainstormed a list of topics and selected titles featuring those themes. Students would then WRITE short stories focusing on the themes they explored through their independent reading.
